“HER STORY”

“You lived a long blessed life. On May, 5, 2019, surrounded by family, at home
on a Sunday afternoon, you peacefully slept away.”

Daisy Laster was born in Camden County, South Carolina on December 16,
1917. She was the eldest child of the late Louis and Elizabeth Small and
was brought up in Waycross, Ga.
She attended the schools in Ware County and was one of the first to attend
an integrated school under the auspices of Mr. C.E. Dawes, Mr. C. Johnson,
and Mrs. Mary Kimball. Daisy graduated with honors in Home Ed and
received a diploma from Center High School. After high school, she
attended Charm School and received several citations. She was also a
member of the first Glee Club under the guidance of Mrs. F. Loraine Isom
and Mrs. Mary Lee Palmer Hall.
Welcome Baptist Church has been her family Church.
Daisy met and married the late Johnny Floyd Laster in the 60’s. They lived
in Newark, NJ where they created memories with their family.
She was involved in many activities, which included the New Jersey Order
of the Eastern Star Queen of Sheba Grand Chapter. A faithful and devoted
member of Welcome Baptist Church, she sang on the All-Adult Choir.
Mother was known for her poise, her class and always travelling
extensively. She always said you were never to old to learn and believed in
speaking well and being well dressed. She loved her great-grandchildren.
They brought smiles to her face and they shared many special moments as
she enjoyed caring for them during summer breaks and whenever possible.
Mother always made sure they were okay. She always made sure everyone
was okay. Her “Are you alright baby?” made you feel better before you even
answered the question. She was always interested in reading and writing
as she read the newspaper religiously, kept a journal and would write notes
to those she loved. She shared her life’s memories with all who’s taken the
time to listen. MaMa was a wealth of knowledge and a phenomenal woman
of grace and great character.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Johnny Laster, two
sisters Beatrice Small of Philadelphia, PA and Sarah Jackson of Montclair,
NJ; four children Leonard “Sonny” Bowen of Long Island, NY, Robert
“Bobby” McQuiller of Newark, NJ, Raheem Muhammad of Newark, NJ and
